Survey by UrbanClap reveals 21% of the city residents opting to buy new ACs before the onset of the Summer

With summer knocking at the door, inhabitants of Kolkata are adopting measures to be summer ready. UrbanClap, India’s largest services marketplace, conducted a survey revealing that the 21% of the total respondents planning to buy at least one ac this summer.


Varun Khaitan, Co-Founder of UrbanClap said, “Today in every ten households three of them have at least one AC installed. In the upcoming Summer season we  at Urbanclap expect the demand for AC repair and service vertical to increase.  Last Summer,  Urbanclap had onboarded almost 1500 professionals. In order to meet this high demand for this years’ prolonged Summer season, Urbanclap is on a mission to onboard 10,000 AC professionals on the platform, complete 1.5 million repair jobs in this vertical and thereby help consumers be summer ready.”


High temperature summons higher Electricity Bill

Past two summers in Kolkata have been unbearable due to the heat wave across the state of West Bengal with the temperatures rising above 40 degree Celcius. According to the Urbanclap survey, 21% of the respondents plan to install at least one AC before the summer season commences. When inquired on the usage pattern, 54% of respondents said that they are accustomed to air conditioned living spaces and use AC whenever required. As high as 36% of the respondents highlighted that they paid electricity bill amounting up to ₹ 3,000, followed by 21% of them paid upto ₹ 5,000.


AC servicing, a mandatory step before the onset of summer months

To ensure the most energy efficient performance of cooling systems, taking care of AC is necessary. Last year 67%of the city residents opted for professional help for servicing their ACs. Also, ACs breaking down in peak summer time is a pertinent consumer issue. These breakdowns were mostly because of cooling issues due to dust (65%), followed by need in gas refilling (26%). However, after service results proved to be very satisfactory with 69% having no complaints in their ac functioning. On an average, 28% of city residents are willing to pay upto ₹ 1000 for quality AC service and repair work. In addition, with regards to yearly maintenance of the appliance, the customers depend on the company representatives (60%), followed by local vendors (25%) and online aggregators (10%) respectively.


To ensure a steady performance in air conditioning, almost 55% of city residents prefer a regular maintenance, with the right time being before Holi (20%). Moreover, to avoid the surge in the summer season, as high as 67% respondents prefer a maintenance service on an annual basis before the summer sets in.


The survey conducted by Urbanclap was to understand the consumer pain points with regards to AC usage and maintenance. The survey saw participation of over 5000+ respondents across key cities in India including Kolkata.
