Tremendous demand for skilled and qualified welders and other trained welding professionals



Kolkata :Availability of competent skilled people in welding at all levels is today recognized as a major constraint for the Indian fabrication and construction industry. IIW India supports Career Development opportunities for all levels of Welding professionals be it a Welding Engineer, a Welding supervisor, Welding Inspector or a Welder.

The recent projection of demand for welders indicates the tremendous demand for skilled and qualified welders and other trained welding professionals. It will be noted that the net demand for welders up to 2015 is estimated of the order of 1.25 lacs and for the next 5-year period 2016-2020, approx. 2.25 lacs. A realistic assessment would be an additional requirement of 20,000 welders per year by 2015-2016 is going up to 30,000 welders by 2020.

Through its various activities and programs, IIW-India is recognized as the premier Institute related to welding in the country having Headquarter in Kolkata and Branches and Chapters in 14 locations spread over the country with over 4500 Individual and Corporate Members. It may be noted here that Padmasri Dr. Baldev Raj, Distinguished Scientist and Ex-Director of Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu is an Ex-President of Indian Institute of Welding and was till recently  the President of the International Institute of Welding.IIW India conducts AMIIW – Associate ship examination which is established to provide opportunity for career development to diploma holders and high school pass-outs to qualify as engineers. Also for engineering graduates to specialize in welding technology. The Indian Institute of Welding operates this examination all over India to confer certification equivalent to Graduate Engineering Degree of a University as recognized by the HRD Department Government of India.Calibri (Body).IIW India has been empanelled by Government of India, DGE&T as an assessing body in Fabrication sector under its Skill Development initiative Scheme (MES-SDI) for widespread assessment of candidates for all courses under the fabrication sector.


The Indian Institute of Welding (IIW India), a member society of the International Institute of Welding, completed 50 years of eventful journey  and year-long celebration has been planned throughout the country, to commemorate this glorious landmark in our history. Mr. R. Srinivasan, President, IIW-India said “As we complete the 50 years of journey today, it’s indeed an occasion for us to feel happy and proud for where we are today with 4500 members and a premiere professional institute of the country for the advancement of Welding Science & Technology”. Mr. Sumit Mazumder, Chairman & Managing Director, TIL Ltd., Kolkata & Immediate Past President, CII was present as Chief Guest and said, “IIW has taken immense initiative in the country’s Skill Development program to meet the demand of 2.25 Lakh of skilled professional by the year 2020.”
