High dose chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy is often needed to eradicate cancer. But
the patient’s bone marrow will be permanently damaged or destroyed by this therapy. So bone marrow transplant is needed to reestablish the patient’s bone marrow function. Bone marrow is the soft, spongy tissue found inside bones. It is the medium for development and storage of most of the body’s blood cell. High doses of chemotherapy drugs kill off this bone marrow. This damaged bone marrow can’t make any blood cells,so bone marrow from a donor or from the patient himself is collected and preserved before the patient has the High dose chemotherapy. This is called a bone marrow harvest. After the patient has had the high dose chemotherapy and sometimes whole body radiotherapy, he has the donor’s or his own bone marrow back into his bloodstream through a drip. The bone marrow cells find their way back to patient’s bone marrow and start to produce blood cells again. This takes about 10 to 15 days following bone marrow administration. This is called a bone marrow rescue. The patient needs intensive supportive care during this period.A transplant using donated bone marrow is called an allograft. A transplant using patient’s own marrow is called an autologous transplant.
