Kolkata to host the First Kannada Film Festival


Kolkata audience will get a glimpse at the Kannada Film Festival  which is being organized for the first time in  Kolkata at Nandan and EZCC from 21 to 24 July 2017 under the aegis of Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, Department of Information and Public  Relations, Government of Karnataka In collaboration with the Federation of Film Societies of India.

Opening Ceremony of the Festival will be held on 21 July 2017 at 5.30 at Nandan-III followed by screening of a short documentary on the journey of Kannada Cinema made for the purpose by Sri P.Sheshadri and the highly acclaimed Kannada feature film ‘Thithi’ (2016, 120 mins by Ramareddy) . The festival-will be inaugurated by Sri Bratya Basu (MIL Govt. of WB) where Sri Rajendra Singh Babu (Chairman of the Karnataka Chalanachitra Academy, National Award winning producer and director), Sri Girish Kasaravalli (internationally acclaimed film maker), Smt Moon Moon Sen (MP and acclaimed actress of both Bengali and Kannad cinema), Sri Hamsalekha (National Award winning Kannada Film Music Director), Sri Yadab Mondal, IAS (Director Commissioner Nandan) and Sri Amitava Ghosh (General Secretary, Federation of Film Societies of India) will be present as the guests of honor. Seven contemporary Kannada feature films will be showcased in the festival.

Rajendra Sibgh Babu said,” The festival will serve as the bridge to both the states.  It will give an exposure to Kannada Films to the audience of Kolkata and the suburbs.”  While Girish Kasaravalli  said “The 1970-80s was the golden period of Kannada cinema.Along with Bengali,Malayalam films, the Kannada films were noted for their artistic nature.Parallel cinema was at its peak.” Bratya Basu added” Kannada Film Industry started slowly to grow on its own, coming out of shadow of Tamil & Hindi Film Industry, with great film makers coming out from Theater Background.”
