JW Marriott Kolkata is the Marriott International group’s eighth property in India, with more in the pipeline including one in Siliguri.The property was inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.Ms. Banerjee said, “Bengal is not just a destination for Kolkata. It is the gateway to countries like Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and accessible to Bangkok, Singapore and Myanmar.” After Marriott International completed the acquisition of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide in September this year, the combined entity becomes the world’s biggest hotel chain.
At present this US-based hotel chain is also the largest hotel chain in India with over 18,000 rooms.Chairman of Mani group, Sanjay Jhujhunwala said that an investment of Rs 1,200 crore had been made for building the hotel and serviced residences. Neeraj Govil, area vice president , South Asia, Marriott International, said, “For the company, around 60% of total business is coming from domestic travellers, mainly from MSME segment, in India. According to Rajeev Menon, Chief Operating Officer, Asia Pacific (excluding Greater China), the company is bullish on India having witnessed double digit growth (both in topline and bottomline) with 70 per cent occupancy levels.
