Exchange of expertise in intervention cardiology


Bangla Interventional Therapeutics is a group of Interventional cardiologists primarily from India and Bangladesh along with leading interventional cardiologists from all over the world.

The 8th Bangla Interventional Therapeutics conference was held in Kolkata.About 500 interventional cardiologists will be attending this meet. Among the cardiologists, 100 of them are from Bangladesh whereas around 10 doctors are attending this conference from the USA, Europe including UK and Netherlands and Korea. Remaining doctors are going to come from India, mainly from Kolkata and from Odisha and other states in the North-East region.

The main theme of this programme is the exchange of expertise in intervention cardiology in complex high-risk intervention procedures (CHIP), transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) and catheter based mitral valve therapy, treatment of holes in the heart and similar heart defect by birth by catheter based umbrella device closure.

Side by side, cases on heart failure and patients’ treatment with left ventricular assisted device (LVAD), Impella device therapy, management of complex cardiac arrhythmias will be discussed in detail.

All the experts will share their views and also exchange their expertise, presenting their cases and sharing their unique experiences in this meeting.

Prof Dr. Rabin Chakraborty, Senior Vice-Chairman of Cardiology Services of Medica Group of Hospitals is the Course Director for this conference from India whereas Prof. Dr. Afzalur Rahman, Director of National Institute of Cardiovascular Disease, Dhaka of Bangladesh is the Course Director from Bangladesh.

It should be noted that Dr. Gary S Mintz from Cardiovascular Research Foundation, New York is an important faculty in this meeting. He is an expert and an authority on Intravascular Imaging (IVUS).

On the other hand Dr. Sanjog Kalra, from Sir Einstein University USA who happens to be the son-in-law of Kolkata and one of the leaders in the world of CHIP therapy in heart disease management, will also attend this meet. He will present his personal angioplasty cases where very complex angioplasty procedures can be performed without any complication.

Dr. Doughlas Muir, who is a very accomplished interventional cardiologist, will show live in Box cases of TAVR. No doubt, this will be an educational lecture for the cardiologists of our country, India. Whereas, Dr. Jung Min Ahn, from South Korea, will present his cases of percutaneous catheter based interventions in valve disease and also complex coronary cases.

Dr. Pil Hyung Lee, who is an expert in performing angioplasty of 100 per cent blockages with new hardwires in a very innovative manner, will also grace this prestigious meet.

Nevertheless, it can be clearly said that all these procedures mentioned above improve life expectancy, quality of life and is capable of adding many more productive years to an individual’s life.

Cardiologists of this region will profoundly benefit from this conference.

There will be two major partnership sessions. One of them will be with Cardiovascular Research Foundation’s intervention division transcatheter therapeutics TCT, New York and the other one will be with Asia Pacific division of Transcatheter Therapeutics TCTAP.

India, being a country in the Asia Pacific region, this will be beneficial for the cardiologists in this part of the region.

Srimati Chandrima Bhattacharyay, Minister of State – Health and Family Welfare, Government of West Bengal will be the Chief Guest and MR. Toufique Hasan, Deputy High Commissioner, Bangladesh, was the Guest of Honour at the inauguration programme.
