Kolkata :The Railway Ministry has taken all steps to ensure overall development and up-gradation of Railway facilities in West Bengal which is a very important state of eastern India. Minister for Railways, Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu said this at a Railway function held at Howrah Station today. Shri Prabhu said that he will discuss a proposal to form a joint venture company with West Bengal Government during his meeting with the Chief Minister, Kumari Mamata Banerjee to ensure further development of the railway infrastructure in the state.
Addressing the foundation stone-laying and inaugural ceremony of several Railway projects and passenger amenities of Eastern Railway, South Eastern Railway and Metro Railway in West Bengal, Shri Prabhu informed that Railways have initiated joint venture projects across India in association with state governments and local municipal corporations in addition to the international funding agencies and countries.
Shri Prabhu inaugurated and laid foundation stone of a number of projects of Eastern Railway including a Foot-overbridge at Agarpara and Tilbhita stations, dedicated double line between Plassey & Beldanga stations and a new rail-line between Arambagh and Goghat and a bogie manufacturing factory at Budge Budge. He also laid the foundation stone of Vivekananda Meditation Centre at Howrah. Similarly, different projects of South Eastern and Metro Railways and RITES were inaugurated or commenced by Shri Prabhu.
Pointing out that the proposed complete improvement of the Railways by the union Government is not luxury but a necessity, Shri Prabhu said that the Government in the last two years has taken 101 initiatives to improve passenger services under its continued infrastructure development process. Last year, a total of Rs. 94,000 Cr. worth of expenditure was incurred on the ongoing projects and new projects involving Rs. 85,000 Cr. were also taken up including a high speed railway project of Rs. 1,00,000 Cr.
He praised Eastern Railway for emerging as the first zonal Railway to remove all unmanned level crossings.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan, Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare; West Bengal Ministers Shri Arup Roy, Shri Laxmi Ratan Shukla and MPs Shri Pradip Bhattacharya and Shri Prasun Banerjee and senior Officials of Railway Board and the Regional Railways attended today’s programme. Shri A. K. Goel, General Manager, Eastern, South Eastern & Metro Railways on this occasion mentioned the progress of cleanliness drive, safety, security, punctuality and further improvement of passenger amenities.
