PSPB Team Triumphant at National Team Chess Championships


39th National Teams Open and 17th National Teams Women 2019  Championship ended on a high note. Petroleum Sports Promotion Board (PSPB ) won National Team Chess Championship 2018 in both Men’s and Women’s category. The Airport Authority of India  and the Railways finished second and third, respectively.

Speaking on the occasion, Chief Guest Maj Gen (Retd) SN Mukherjee, the former Vice Chancellor of the Lakshmibai National Institute of Physical Education (LNIPE) Gwalior suggested students to develop interest in playing sports and games along with concentrating on academics because sports teach discipline and living with discipline would pave way to reach higher positions in life. “Chess is a mind game where the player has to strategise and plan. It helps enhance concentration as students need to focus and plan their moves” said Maj Gen (Retd) SN Mukherjee.

2018 Asian Games Basketball player Madhu Kumari  who was present to give away the awards said “Participation is most important not winning or losing.”

Secretary of BCA and Joint Secretary of AICF, IM Atanu Lahiri  Atanu Lahiri said “Total 58 teams comprising of over 285 players from various states of the country took part in this tournament. India has an abundance of young chess talent. Competitions like these give them a good platform to compete with the best.” Lahiri is also FIDE – World Chess Federation Commission’s Chess in Education Member is heading a push to make chess a compulsory part of the curriculum in schools.
